Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the Creative Cue Cards Still Life Deck?

A: The Still Life Deck is a set of 45 printed art prompt cards created by Brisbane artist and arts educator Jenny McNamara. The cards are divided into four categories — shape prompts featuring flowers and vases, pattern prompts, colour prompts, and extension cards — and are designed to give artists a creative starting point for drawing and painting. All you need to get started is paper and coloured pencils.

Q: How many cards are in the Still Life Deck?

A: The Still Life Deck contains 45 cards in total: 9 shape prompt cards featuring flowers and vases, 9 pattern prompt cards, 9 colour prompt cards, 9 extension cards to challenge your thinking further, plus an information sheet. All cards come packaged in a hard plastic case.

Q: What subjects does the Still Life Deck focus on?

A: The Still Life Deck focuses on classic still life subjects — primarily flowers and vases. The shape cards feature a variety of flower and vase forms, which are then combined with pattern and colour cards to generate unique compositional prompts. The extension cards introduce additional creative challenges to push your work further.

Q: What quality are the Still Life Deck cards?

A: Cards are printed on 350gsm card stock with a cellosheen coating — a thin film applied with heat and pressure that gives the cards a smooth, silky surface and adds durability and protection. They are the size of a standard playing card and come in a sealed hard plastic case.

Q: Is the Still Life Deck suitable for beginners?

A: Yes — it’s designed with beginners in mind. The cards remove the paralysis of the blank page by giving you specific creative conditions to start from: a shape, a pattern, and a colour. No prior art training is required. All you need is paper and a box of coloured pencils.

Q: Can the Still Life Deck be used in a classroom?

A: Yes. Jenny McNamara designed the cards with a background in arts education, and the Still Life Deck works well in classroom settings for structured but open-ended art activities. Each student will produce a different result from the same set of cards, making it ideal for group art sessions.

Q: Can Still Life Deck cards be mixed with other Creative Cue Card decks?

A: Yes — the Still Life Deck cards are interchangeable with all other Jenny McNamara Creative Cue Card themed decks. Mixing a Still Life shape card with pattern cards from the Abstract Face Deck or colour cards from the Universal Collection creates entirely new combinations and multiplies the creative possibilities.

Q: Is the Still Life Deck available as a digital download?

A: The Still Life Deck is available both as a printed physical deck and as an instant-download digital version. The digital version is available separately on the website and can be purchased, downloaded, and printed at home or at a local print shop immediately after purchase.

Q: Where is the Still Life Deck shipped from?

A: Physical decks are shipped from Brisbane, Australia. International shipping is available.

Q: How do you use the Still Life Deck?

A: Draw one card from each of the three main categories — shape, pattern, and colour — and use those prompts as the starting conditions for your artwork. From there, the creative decisions are yours. You can also draw an extension card for an additional challenge. Each combination produces a different result, so there are thousands of possible outcomes from a single deck.
